What You'll Do
Journey through centuries of Roman history on this immersive full-day tour of Hadrian's Wall and the vibrant North East. Once the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, this region is filled with stories not only of conflict and defence but also of the diverse peoples who lived, worked and adapted to life on this wild edge of the empire. This tour brings that world to life through fascinating sites, museums and dramatic landscapes.Your experience begins in Carlisle, a key centre during the campaigns of Emperor Septimius Severus. At Tully House Museum you will explore its remarkable Roman collection before continuing east to Birdoswald Roman Fort, once home to a thousand-strong unit from modern-day Romania. Here, you will uncover the history of the fort and its role in guarding this remote frontier. The journey then continues to the central section of Hadrian's Wall, the most picturesque stretch and formerly home to the famous Sycamore Gap. You will visit Housesteads, the most complete Roman fort in Britain, and Vindolanda, where more than fifty years of excavations have revealed extraordinary insights into daily life on the wall. Finally, your day concludes in the east at Newcastle upon Tyne. Explore the Great North Museum, home to many of the most important archaeological finds from the region, before visiting Segedunum Roman Fort and Arbeia at the mouth of the River Tyne to complete your Hadrian's Wall adventure.
