Devon: Moorlands, Coastlines & Gentle Beauty

Devon is a county of variety and balance, where rolling green hills meet a beautifully varied coastline, and life unfolds at an easy, welcoming pace. Bordering Cornwall to the west and stretching from the Bristol Channel to the English Channel, Devon offers some of England’s most diverse and quietly captivating landscapes.

Inland, Devon is defined by its wide-open spaces. Dartmoor National Park feels ancient and elemental, with granite tors rising from heather-covered moorland and wild ponies roaming freely. Exmoor, shared with Somerset, is softer and more wooded, where rivers cut through deep valleys and views stretch endlessly to the sea. These landscapes are made for gentle exploration, scenic drives, and unrushed walks.

Devon’s coastline is just as varied. In the south, the English Riviera brings a surprisingly mild climate, palm-lined promenades, and elegant seaside towns like Torquay. Further along the coast, the historic riverside town of Dartmouth charms visitors with its pastel houses, maritime heritage, and beautiful setting at the mouth of the River Dart. To the east, the dramatic red cliffs and ancient rocks of East Devon mark the start of the UNESCO-listed Jurassic Coast, where fossils reveal stories millions of years old.

Food and drink are a source of local pride. Devon is known for its rich dairy, fresh seafood, farm-grown produce, and its famously debated cream tea – enjoyed cream first, then jam, if you’re following local custom. Country pubs, waterside cafés, and welcoming inns make it easy to settle in and stay awhile.

Devon is a place to slow down, savour the scenery, and enjoy England at its most relaxed and restorative.
